Music by The Piano Brothers

Roland Paul Routhier, 86, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 while resting comfortably at Skyview Center in Wallingford, CT.  He had experienced a rather steady decline in health since breaking his hip last October and was surrounded by his loving family and friends in his final days taking time to speak with each of them privately.  He passed away on his own terms, accepting and ready.

Roland served in the US Navy submarine service from 1950 – 1954, stationed in both New London and Key West.  He was a successful accountant and comptroller, accomplishments in which he took great pride, but Roland was a man who preferred to be defined by who he was not by what he did.  He was a truly good man, kind and gentle, honest and giving with a tremendous faith in the strength of family – a strength from which he drew until the very end.  He loved his family deeply and intensely and that love was returned in kind.

Roland was born in the home of his parents, Edmond and Alma (Bruisson) Routhier, in Easthampton, Massachusetts on September 20, 1931.  This fiercely devoted father, loyal husband, approachable and inspiring grandfather and great-grandfather, loving brother and trusted friend is survived by his son and daughter-in- law, David and Bobbie (Wallingford, CT) with whom he lived for the last five years, son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Jackie (Southampton, MA), granddaughters Kristina Sechko, Kathryn Rathje and husband Jason, valued family friend Scott Sechko, and grandsons Matthew, Jeffrey, Justin and Jeremy Routhier.

He will be missed by his great-grandchildren Bradley and Chase Sechko and Blake Routhier.  He is also survived by his sister Rita Torrey and brother and sister-in-law Norman (Pete) and Eileen Routhier all of Easthampton, MA and brother and sister-in-law Rene (Butchie) Routhier and Dorothy Foley (South Hadley, MA)  and sister Doris Suleski in Florida along with many nephews, nieces and friends in several states.  He was predeceased by many treasured family members and friends including Esther (Boivin) Routhier, brothers Edmond and Eugene, sister Jeanne (Genovese) and most especially by his son Philip and great-granddaughter Anastasia.  They are most certainly waiting for him.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family at Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Easthampton, MA 01027, on Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 4 – 7 p.m.  There will be a mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2018 at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 33 Adams Street, Easthampton, MA followed by burial at Brookside Cemetery, Williston Avenue, Easthampton, MA.  He will be remembered at Union Station, 125A Pleasant Street, Northampton, MA on Friday, August 31, 2018 in a “Celebration of Roland’s Life”.  We will all be remembering him in our own private ways for the rest of our days.

Roland’s family would like to thank the staff at the VA Facility in West Haven, CT, Skyview Center in Wallingford, Patient Care in Hamden, CT (you know who you are), Charisma and all others who helped to provide him with such great care. Donations In his honor may be made to Shriners’ Hospital, Processing Center, P.O. Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438-4510 or Paralyzed Veterans of America, Donation Processing Center, P.O. Box 758532, Topeka, KS 66675-8532.  Thank you and may Roland rest in peace.
