Sandra Loiterstein Obituary

Sandra R. Loiterstein (Lipshitz) was born in the Bronx on September 6, 1937.  Sandy, as she was known, attended Camp Kinderland for several summers and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and the City College of New York.  She went back to school in the 1970s, earning a Ph.D. in Psychology from George Washington University.  She worked as a clinical psychologist in private practice in Arlington, Virginia, for many years.

Sandy married Philip Loiterstein in 1957 and together they lived in various places around the country as Phil relocated for work.  In the mid-1960s, they settled in the Burleith neighborhood of Washington, DC, where they raised three children over the next decade.  They then moved to Morrison Street in Chevy Chase, DC, until their children completed high school.  They spent their later years in Kenwood, Maryland, and summers in Shaftsbury, Vermont.  Sandy was most happy when her children and their children would visit.

In 2017, they moved to the Lathrop Retirement Community in Easthampton, Massachusetts, where Philip died on December 4, 2017.  In 2025, Sandy moved to Linda Manor in Leeds, MA.  On December 5, she passed way peacefully at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a brief illness. She leaves her three children, David Loiterstein (Polly Kipp) of Madison, CT, Ben Greenwood of Florence, MA, and Robin Peters (John) of Concord, MA, as well as seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, her sister Rita Flores of Santa Cruz, CA, and several nieces and nephews.

Sandy loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, playing Scrabble and other games, relaxing beside the peaceful mountains of Vermont, singing folk songs with others, and playing her beloved guitar and piano.

Contributions in her memory can be made to the Yiddish Book Center (www.yiddishbookcenter.org/tribute) in Amherst, MA, to honor Sandy’s love of the Yiddish language.
