Roget Lockard Obituary

Roget Lockard, 82, of Southampton, MA, passed away at home on June 21, 2025 with his wife and soulmate, Susan, by his side.  He was born in Waterloo, Iowa on October 23, 1942 to Willard Roger Lockard and Mary Alice (McConeghey) Lockard.  He was a 1985 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst earning a master’s degree in education in Counseling Psychology which led to a 40-year career as a beloved psychotherapist in private practice in Northampton.

Known for his knowledge of and work in the addiction recovery community, Roget's "unique blend of wisdom, knowledge and unconditional love and support" was a large part of his legacy.

At the age of seven he was bedridden for 6 months with Rheumatic Fever, the seminal experience which led to his life-long love of reading...anything from comics to physics, politics, spirituality and what he considered the most important issue affecting the planet, climate change.  His many writings on these subjects have been used in trainings, at conferences and shared with friends and family throughout the years.

Roget's journey from Iowa began in Chicago and New York City where he was active in organizing and participating in anti-war protests and the civil rights movement.  His trademark mandolin and guitar accompanying him along the way.  Also, as he made his way out of this era, he became sober, which he would no doubt say was the most transformative experience of his life as he worked to improve his relationships,  especially with his children.

Eventually making his way to New England, he met Susan and in 1988 they were married; it was a relationship they both celebrated and cherished through the years...it never lost its sparkle!

Son, brother, husband, father, uncle, stepfather, grandfather "Papa" and most recently great grandfather, Roget was a man of integrity through his commitment to sobriety.  He was courageous in his relationships: accepting, non-judgmental, loving, compassionate, honest and sometimes stubborn though he was no stranger to admitting his shortcomings.  As Parkinson's Disease symptoms encroached on his mobility and independence, he was never bitter nor complaining, always more concerned that he was a burden to others.

Roget was predeceased by his parents, his sister Leasa, his brothers Bert and Fred and his beloved son, Sean, in 2019.

He is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Sara Silvia and her husband Dave, stepsons Curt Loud his fiancé Jenn and her daughter Henrietta, Bryan Loud and his wife Hilda, Wade Loud and his wife Nicole, seven grandchildren: Christopher and his wife Kelly, Samantha, Molli and her husband Mason, Cobi, Molli & Cobi's mom Jodi, Aurora, Marley, Shey and great-granddaughter Charlotte.  He is also survived by his sister Lyn Weatherly and her husband Jay, his brother Leo and his wife Brenda, Brothers-in-law Dan Roberge and Rich Roberge and his wife Gail, sister-in-law Linda Marko; former wives Julie (Weinberg) Pick, Judith (Crowell) Lockard and Susan Sprung, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the compassionate, loving staff at CDH VNA & Hospice as well as the caring, committed staff at Caring Solutions.  Additionally, a big shout out to Molli for her loving and devoted care to her Papa.
