Robert Niedzwiecki—known as Bob, Bobby, Dad, and Grandpa—was a teacher, husband, father, grandfather, friend, gardener, beagle lover, and outdoorsman. Robert was born March 26, 1943. He died of pancreatic cancer on October 6, 2022 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital with his family at his bedside.
The only child of the late Matthew and Bertha (Keller) Niedzwiecki, Robert attended Southampton schools. He graduated in 1965 from American International College with a degree in Mathematics. Robert began teaching at South Hadley High School then moved to the Northampton school system.
When he wasn’t teaching, Robert was usually outdoors, either cutting wood to heat the house, filling the bird feeders (he loved birds, especially cardinals), working in the yard or garden, or helping a friend or neighbor. Robert was a person you could always call on for help.
Robert retired from teaching in 1994. After retiring, he purchased a beagle puppy and became involved with the Holyoke Beagle Club. He spent many enjoyable hours at the Club. Robert loved his beagles and, over his lifetime, eight beagles, each of them greatly loved, lived at the Niedzwiecki home.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Fern (Richards) Niedzwiecki; his children, Danna Niedzwiecki Lockwood and her husband Bill; Dena Mechoso and her husband Diego; and David Niedzwiecki and his partner Susan Huston; and grandchildren Ella and Alina Mechoso and Seth and Abby Niedzwiecki.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Easthampton, MA on Friday, November 18, 2022 from 5 pm to 7 pm. Interment of his ashes will be private. Donations in Robert’s name may be made to the Holyoke Beagle Club c/o J. Moynihan, 203 Southampton Road, Westhampton, MA 01027.
