Mieczyslaw Bak

Mieczyslaw (better known as Matthew or Mietek) Bak, 64, passed away peacefully at his home on June 7, 2026 after multiple long-term illnesses.

Born on January 2, 1962 in Nowa Sarzyna, Poland, Mietek was the youngest son of the late Wladyslaw and Aniela (Zuraw) Bak. Mietek joined his late aunt, Zosia Bak, in Easthampton, Massachusetts in the late 1980s where he would go on to work at Fedor Oldsmobile and Leoni Wire. His love for soccer was unmatched; he will have his pick of seats for this year’s World Cup matches.

Mietek is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Dorota (Kowalska) Bak, daughter, Karolina (Bak) Weagle, son, Kamil Bak, son-in-law, Evan Weagle, Kamil’s girlfriend, Alyssa Ippolito, in-laws, Henryk and Janina Kowalski, niece, Izabella Kowalski, and his furry best friend, Oliver. He is also survived by his siblings in Poland, Jan Bak and Maria (Bak) Ozog, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and his former soccer teammates. Mietek was predeceased by his parents, Wladyslaw and Aniela (Zuraw) Bak, aunt, Zosia Bak, sister-in-law, Urszula Kowalska, and his furry friend, Buddy.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mitchell Funeral Home in Easthampton; a calling hour will be held at Saint Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, followed by a Catholic mass at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Westfield, Saint Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee, or Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Slack, Dr. Arley Diaz, their teams, and the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Visiting Nurses for keeping Mietek with us against all odds for the last ten years.
