Marjorie E. Magner, 96, of Lathrop Inn, Easthampton, MA, died August 11, 2017 at Linda Manor Assistant Living, Leeds. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska January 21, 1921 the daughter of John L. and Mary E. Gatchell Magner and was the sister of the late James Leroy Magner.
Marjorie attended schools in Omaha, received a Bachelor’s Degree from University of Nebraska and began teaching at the Nebraska State School for the Deaf. In 1943 she came to Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, MA where she taught hearing impaired children and worked with parents and teachers of the deaf for 53 years. She received the M.A. and M.E.D. degrees from Smith College in Northampton, MA. She was also a Fulbright Scholar in 1954 – 55 in England where she pursued her interest in speech, audiology and in teaching deaf children. She presented courses, workshops and classroom demonstration for teachers of the deaf at numerous colleges, universities and special education programs throughout The United States, Canada , England, Newfoundland and Puerto Rico. Marjorie received many Honor Awards including; Who’s Who in Education, Who’s Who of American Women and the A. G. Bell Association , Honors Award.
She leaves two nephews Jerry L. Magner and Roger B. Magner, both of Omaha, NE. four great nephews, and many great grand nephews and nieces, also a dear friend and co-worker at Clarke School, Priscilla Pike.
Memorial Service will be held Saturday August 26, at 11 am, at First Churches of Northampton, 129 Main Street, Northampton, MA.
Donation in Marjorie’s memory may be given to First Churches of Northampton, or to any charity of choice.
