Linda King Cooper died August 27 after a period of declining health. Born Jan 4, 1942, the daughter of the late Harry & Jean (Crosby) King, Linda grew up in Jacksonville FL and attended Jacksonville University, where she met her late husband, James Cooper.
After getting married the couple moved up to Jim’s hometown of Southampton MA. It was there that she and Jim started a family and lived for over 50 years.
Linda was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Southampton, where her strong alto voice could be heard in the choir, or she could be found in the kitchen helping to cook and serve many church suppers. Over the years Linda probably served at least one term on just about every committee. She and Jim led the church youth group for a number of years. Being of service to others in the name of doing good was very important to Linda. She truly lived by the word of Mathew 25:40 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me'
Linda was an entrepreneur at heart, running a small catering company for a few years before opening and running the much-loved ice cream stand “The Cone” for over a decade. She and Jim also owned a successful bed & breakfast in Southampton for many years. She loved meeting and getting to know her guests, many of whom returned year after year, and more than a few of whom became dear friends.
Although born in the south Linda fully embraced the title of “Yankee”. She would often say she was a reformed southerner. She was a card-carrying member of the Red Sox nation and also enjoyed watching the Celtics and Patriots play. By far her favorite pastime was spending time with her kids, and their friends, many of whom referred to her as Ma Cooper. Later in life, she relished being Gahmy to her grandkids, attending their sporting events, and musical and theatrical performances, as well as hosting many of their birthday parties at her home.
Linda was an avid reader and knitter, and loved to travel. She and her longtime friend Carolyn would make numerous trips to visit friends and family all up and down the East Coast, as well as other parts of the country. Always stopping along the way to visit interesting landmarks. Nantucket and the Cape were among her favorite vacation destinations.
Linda leaves behind her son Scott Cooper, Scott's wife Kate, her daughter Amy Guyette, Amy's husband Lawrence, and her grandchildren Juniper, Hayden, his fiance Kathryn, Nora, and Henry, as well as her sister Sue Bradley and Sue's husband Howard, and several nieces, nephews, and grand-nephews.
Services will be held at the 1st Congregational Church of Southampton 212 College Hwy. Southampton MA on Monday, September 9th at 12:30.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Linda's name to the First Congregational Church of Southampton.
