John Gnatek, age 94, passed away at Linda Manor, in Leeds on June 9th, 2026. He was born in Hadley, Massachusetts on December 27th, 1931 and was one of 7 children. He was the son of Michael and Mary (Kostek) Gnatek. John is predeceased by his wife, Jeannette Gnatek, of 69 years, on February 27, 2026. Their laughter, will forever live in our memories.
John along with his two artist brothers, studied under Stephen Hamilton. His study of art was continued at the University of Miami, Maryland Institute and the London City Guild Art School, London, England. His lifetime of art has produced numerous awards. Noted for his landscapes, especially birch trees, and street scenes, John’s media included watercolor, oil and acrylic besides his miniature woodcarvings. He was a member of Southern Vermont Art Center, North Shore Arts Association, past president of Deerfield Valley Art Association, and the Williamsburg Brush and Palette. John’s paintings are in collections in the United States, Europe, Central America, South America, Canada, Japan and the Caribbean.
He will be missed by his daughter, Elizabeth and husband, David Morey, in Chapel Hill, NC, daughter, Jacquelyn and husband, Michael Copperwheat, in St. Petersburg, FL, son, Vincent and wife, Paula Gnatek, in Hudson, NH and daughter/caregiver, Melissa Gnatek and partner, Tim Banks, in Leeds, MA and grandchildren, Zachery Morey and Tobias Gnatek.
