Janet L. Mathison
September 9, 1941 – July 25, 2025
Janet L. Mathison, 83, of Chesterfield passed away peacefully at home on July 25, 2025. Born in Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of Carlton and Stella (Thompson) Snape and was affectionately known as “Janey” to her parents.
She was a 1959 graduate of Northampton High School. Janet began her career as a cook and waitress at Woolworths in Northampton before owning and operating a catering business and several local restaurants. She later worked as a real estate agent and went on to manage The Coffee Shop at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
An avid horsewoman, Janet grew up riding on her family farm and shared her passion for horses with her daughters through 4H and local horse shows. She later enjoyed trail riding with the Hampshire County Riding Club. Janet also loved camping, canoeing, and caring for her many Sheltie dogs.
She is survived by her partner of 39 years, George Still; her son, Andrew Mathison and family; daughter, Terrylee Crowther; grandchildren Kristin Martin, Jill Martin, Aimee Jarvis, and Morgan Mathison; great-granddaughter, Chloe Samson; and niece, Cheryl Fischer. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jody Brigley, and grandchildren Dalton and Vanessa Brigley.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home.
