James Cogswell, age 90, passed away at Westfield Rehab and Health Center on April 23rd, 2026. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on October 14, 1935. He was the son of Lloyd B. Cogswell and Celia Mary Cogswell (Shepard). He was married to Shirley Ann Cogswell.
James attended University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business.
James worked as a manufacturer and owned his own Fire Extinguisher business for many years. He held various other positions throughout his life but was most proud of his time in the US Navy.
James served in the Navy from 1957-1961, he was a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He was aboard the USS Vogelgesand and was a Gunnery Officer.
James is predeceased by his wife Shirley and stepsons, Keith and David MacPhail. James is survived by his children Heidi Whitman of CA; Kristen Cogswell of MT; Andrew Cogswell of CA; Marya Pillifant of AK; Debra Barrow (husband Dave) stepdaughter from wife Shirley, FL; and Shannon MacPhail (husband David, deceased) stepdaughter-in-law from wife Shirley, MA. His grandchildren Connor, Grant and Madeline Whitman, Ian Cogswell, Amelia, Jackson and Campbell Pillifant, Christopher, Benjamin, Kimberly, and Bradley Barrow, Jessica MacPhail Garcia and Melissa MacPhail Droeske, Melanie MacPhail Burkhardt. His great grandchildren Ellie and Flynn. Though he is gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Brownie and many friends.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on May 17th at 11:00am at Center Cemetery in New Salem MA
