Ernest "Ernie" L. Liimatainen of Agawam, age 80, passed away at home on January 28. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 2, 1945, the son of Toivo and Hazel (O’Brien) Liimatainen.
Ernie was raised in Chester, MA and attended Chester public schools. Ernie was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the U.S. Army 75th Infantry Division. Upon returning home, Ernie worked for many years as a logger and then for the Town of Belchertown DPW retiring many years ago. He was predeceased by his loving wife Lucille (Kelly) Liimatainen in 1994.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and took pride in teaching each of them to fish. He was a phenomenal fisherman. He recently moved to Agawam in October and loved spending more time with his son Bob. He never met a slot machine that he couldn't tame (he was especially fond of the Buffalo machines). He enjoyed many of these trips with his brother Toivo, visiting casinos throughout New England.
Ernie leaves behind his Sons, Bob Liimatainen and his wife Kim of Agawam, and Jeff Liimatainen of Gainesville, FL. He was Papa to his grandchildren Matthew and Nicholas of Agawam, Courtney of LaPorte, TX and Bob of Mason TX.
Brothers John of Hindsdale, NH, Toivo of Laconia, NH, and Warren of Sullivan, ME and sister Martha Doyle of Keene, NH.
He was predeceased by his son Ernest Jr and grandson Jeffrey and sisters Linda, Esta, and his brother Alan. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday at the Mitchell Funeral Home from 3 to 6pm followed at 6pm with a Prayer Service. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Spring in Center Cemetery in Chesterfield, MA.
