Doris Guillumette, 99, of Easthampton, MA peacefully passed away on June 12, 2021 with close friends at her side. She lived a full and enriched life. She was born in New York City on April 5, 1922, the daughter of Paul & Martha Guillumette. Her schooling began in Brussels, while her Dad was on assignment with National Geographic. Upon returning to New York City she attended a Dewey style school, learning by doing. During the war years she attended Barnard College, and started work as a translator, plus office work, and later management.
In 1960, she moved to Western Mass and switched her career path to teaching, and there she found her true calling. She received a doctorate in French from UMass and spent many fine years teaching at Northfield Mount Herman, then UMass. “So much to learn and enough leisure to make very good friends.”
Her aging years were spent at Lathrop Community, known for its warmth and free sprit. While living there Doris joined many committees, two favorites being the art shows and thrift shop. She also gave literature seminars at Five College Learning in Retirement. At Lathrop Doris was known by all. She could be found making suggestions and recommendations to the administration to help with ways to further improve her beloved Lathrop Community. Always one to easily make friends. She could always be seen out and about, whether conversing with friends in French or walking and chatting with the neighbors and their dogs.
All who met Doris were touched by her strong concerns and care for others. A brilliant, independent, energetic, compassionate woman always trying to improve the lives of others. In her 99 years Doris became a dear lifelong friend to so many…
Doris was predeceased by John Kuzmeski, her loving companion of 35 years.
As per her wishes donations in her name can be made to Lathrop Inc.,100 Bassett Brook Drive, Easthampton, MA 01027
