Donalda Pearl Brown (Matheson), 100, of Easthampton, formerly of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at the Holyoke Healthcare Center on Saturday, January 8, 2021. She was born in Lac-Mẻgantic, Quẻbec, Canada on October 13, 1920, the daughter of John and Ada Matheson. She came to the United States in 1952 with her husband and son making Holyoke her home for 60 years. She moved to Easthampton 8 years ago to live with her son and daughter-in-law. For many years, she was active in cub scouts as a den mother. Donalda also enjoyed teaching Sunday School at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holyoke. In later years, she attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Easthampton. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, sewing and knitting, piano, calligraphy, and writing poetry. In 1939, her first published poem was in the New York World’s Fair Anthology of Verse, and she later won an award for her poem Chernobyl. She is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Arthur G. Brown, who passed in 1995, She was also predeceased by her niece, Yolanda Frasl, as well as 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Donalda is survived by one son David Brown and his wife Gwen of Easthampton, her 2 granddaughters Melanie Conway of Easthampton and Stephanie Bishop and husband Mark of Northampton, 6 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, and her great niece and nephew Kim Zeoli and John Frasl of New York.
The family would like to thank Hospice Care of Holyoke and the Holyoke Healthcare Center for help and care of Donalda over the past several months.
Funeral services and viewing hour will be held Friday January 15,2021 at Calvary Baptist Church in Easthampton starting at 10 am. Service will be at 11 am. Burial will follow in Forestdale Cemetery in Holyoke.
