Charles Hughes Obituary

Charles L. Hughes (Uncle Charlie), 87, passed away on July 14, 2024. Born in Providence, RI on March 13, 1937, his childhood years were spent in Warren, RI.

Charlie graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1954, and from the US Naval Academy in 1959 after one year at Brown University on a Burke Memorial Caddy

Scholarship.

Upon discharge from the Navy in 1953, he went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in 1965 (BEE) and John Hopkins in 1971 (MS). He was a diligent student.

These academic underpinnings contributed to his very successful business career with IBM from 1963 to 1997. This career culminated with the sale and implementation of an advanced electronic nationwide network for all Medicare financial records.

Uncle Charlie was known by many.   Charlie was an avid golfer and was an active member of area coffee shops including the former DOME club in Easthampton.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife Diane (Vanasse Tilton} and his sister Kathleen Gorelick (husband Dennis), niece Maura Maria (husband Martin) (daughters Shannon and Caitlin). He is predeceased by his parents Charles L. and Madeline (Murphy) and his first wife Elizabeth (Zawa lick).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday July 25 at 10am in St. Patrick’s Church, South Hadley followed by burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Easthampton. The calling hours will be Wednesday July 24, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park Street, Easthampton, MA from 4 to 6pm.
