Augustine Akhidime Obituary

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Professor Augustine Ehijeagbon Akhidime

Professor Augustine Ehijeagbon Akhidime, born on February 20, 1954, in Sabongida-Ora to Fabunmi and Florence Uwade Akhidime, was a remarkable man whose life was defined by unwavering faith, devotion to family, and a commitment to lifelong learning. He was married to Mrs. Mary Abisose Akhidime (née Evbotokhai) and together, they were blessed with four children.

A Journey of Faith and Service

From an early age, Professor Akhidime committed his life to the service of God. He became a born-again Christian in 1971 and spent over 50 years as an ordained minister, passionately serving in God’s vineyard. His faith was not just a personal belief but a lifestyle that influenced every aspect of his life. He lived by the principles of loving God with all his heart, soul, and mind, and loving his neighbors as himself. His life was an embodiment of these values as he spread the gospel, provided counsel, and encouraged those around him to draw closer to God. His unwavering dedication to God’s service serves as a powerful reminder to live a life of faith and purpose.

A Devoted Family Man

To Professor Akhidime, family was both a ministry and a blessing. He was not just a father; he was a mentor, coach, and friend. Fully present and involved in every part of his children's lives, he guided them spiritually and supported their personal endeavors. He balanced his roles with grace, always making time for his family despite his numerous commitments. His teachings were not just spoken words but values he lived by—values of godliness, humility, and the importance of laying up treasures in heaven. His devotion to his family showed the importance of nurturing relationships and building a legacy centered on love, faith, and integrity.

A Lifelong Commitment to Learning and Reinvention

Professor Akhidime’s life was also characterized by a passion for lifelong learning and reinvention. He completed his primary education at St. Johns Angelical Primary School, Sabongida (Evbiobe) Ora, in 1968, and his secondary education at the prestigious Holy Trinity Grammar School, Sabongida-Ora, from 1969 to 1973, achieving Division 1 in his June 1973 School Certificate Examination. He went on to earn a BSc in Accountancy from the University of Maiduguri in 1982, with the support of a Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship, and later pursued an MBA, MSc, and PhD in Accounting from the University of Benin, Benin City.

Faced with the ethical challenges in the business landscape of Nigeria, Professor Akhidime chose not to compromise his principles. At the age of 50, he decided to return to academia to pursue a second Master’s degree, which led him to his true calling in academics. His dedication to personal growth culminated in him becoming a full professor in 2018, a remarkable achievement considering his late start in academia. With over 42 publications in reputable journals, he left behind a legacy of scholarship that encourages us never to stop learning and always seek new ways to grow.

An Unshakeable Trust in the Lord

Throughout his life, Professor Akhidime demonstrated an unshakeable trust in the Lord, akin to the biblical figures who faced their trials with unwavering faith. He often echoed the words of Job: “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.” Whether in moments of personal struggle or professional setbacks, his trust in God never wavered. He believed that God's plans were sovereign and that all things worked together for the good of those who love Him. His steadfast faith serves as an inspiration to trust God in all circumstances, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Focusing on the Eternal

One of the most profound lessons Professor Akhidime shared was the importance of focusing on the eternal rather than the temporal. He often reminded us that after we pass, the quality of those saying "welcome" on the other side—referring to the angels and heavenly hosts—is far more important than the grandeur of the farewells and tributes on earth. This perspective shaped many of his life decisions. He lived with eternity in mind, always striving to please God rather than man. His life challenges us to evaluate where our priorities lie, to invest in our relationship with God, and to live in such a way that when our time comes, we will be welcomed with joy into the eternal kingdom.

Family and Final Farewell

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Akhidime; his sons, Duetime and Austin; his daughters, Priscilla and Virtue; and several grandchildren who continue to carry on his legacy of faith and love. In accordance with the family's wishes, the services and burial were held privately.

A Legacy of Faith and Purpose

As we reflect on the life of Professor Augustine Ehijeagbon Akhidime, we are reminded of the virtues that truly matter—faith, family, learning, trust, and eternal focus. His life was a sermon in itself, teaching us to devote ourselves to God, to love and be present for our families, to embrace lifelong learning and growth, to trust God through all trials, and to set our hearts on things above. We celebrate his legacy with gratitude and honor, inspired to live lives that honor God, serve others, and build treasures in heaven, where the true rewards await.

Rest in peace, Professor Augustine Ehijeagbon Akhidime. Your life and legacy will forever remain in our hearts.
