Arthur David Medeiros, Jr. - a man of many talents, beloved father, husband, sibling and friend. A man who came from very little. The oldest of 10 children who willingly quit school in 10th grade to help support his family - giving his younger siblings many years of memories, taking them for a ride or for ice cream. A man who prided himself on being a self-taught sign painter after his first job with Ace Sign Co. - watching every painter closely as he cleaned the floors and bathrooms and took out the trash - eventually pulling what little paint and discarded paint brushes he could from the trash and taking them home to teach himself the Art. Anyone who knew him and knew he was in the area, striping or lettering a sign or vehicle, would stop and pull up a seat. He never complained about showing off his talent. He very much enjoyed the time with people and the conversation. He was an avid golfer at Wyckoff Country Club, leading a league called Arties Armies for years. He was a member and a face at many Country Clubs over the years – among them Holyoke Country Club, Northampton, Pine Grove, East Mountain, Tekoa and Shaker Farms - before settling at Wycoff. He was a steadfast supporter of his daughters in their careers and always told his children and grandchildren they can be what ever they wanted to be in life – “The sky’s the limit”. At a gathering you could expect him to hand you a hand-painted sign with writings of encouragement – gifts which his grandchildren still cherish. He painted signs from Vermont to Springfield and was well known for greyhound bus lines and Peter Pan Bus Lines. He was known for painting Tinkerbell, Mickie, Donald Duck et al and the creation of their logos. He lettered and pinstriped for many trucking companies and many businesses throughout New England. His art abilities were appreciated far and wide - He was even offered the Main Street signage job for Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in the late 60’s as a young man, but turned it down so as not to uproot his family. He was the face of Northampton having painted nearly every business sign, including Thornes Market, Calvin Theater, Hotel Northampton, Beardsley’s, Packard’s, and all the store fronts over the years. He was a lover of ice skating and gave many free years of teaching to Easthampton Skating Club at Williston Rink. He was a member of the Lions Club in his early years and was always donating to charities whenever asked. He belonged to the Easthampton Pascommuck Club since a young man, and his entire life revolved around the friendships and paths he crossed at all of these beloved organizations and businesses. He eventually took a job in management for Winston Networks managing Springfield Outdoor Advertising and became quite the political machine, saving the faces and life of outdoor advertising in Massachusetts from being put to rest by political motivations. As younger generations took over family local businesses and began using decal lettering, his trade petered out - it was a sad time for him, but he had a blessed work life all those years. He eventually retired from advertising at 55 and went on to enjoy travelling to Treasure Island, Fl. with his wife over the next 20 years.
His only complaint in life was he wished he never had to grow old. Anyone who met or knew him was richer for his presence in their lives - He will be sadly missed by so many.
