South Hadley – Anna D. Merrington, 94, of South Hadley, died peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Loomis Village.

She was born February 15, 1924 in Boston, MA to Adolph and Ida (Barron) Jacobson.

Anna was first employed as a chemist and then found her true calling as an English teacher. She taught many years at Livingston High School in New Jersey and, then, at Lexington High School in Massachusetts. An innovative educator, she introduced Critical Thinking and Feminism into her curricula.

Anna and her husband, Robert, loved traveling, world culture, music, art, fine food and theater. Together, as life-long learners, they visited many countries, sharing their adventures with family and friends.

As an enduring advocate for social justice, Anna was never one to shy away from voicing her opinions. She stood up for equality, freedom, and truth and was happy to join discussion groups. She loved libraries and was very proud to help found the Boxborough Library.

Anna greatly loved her family and was dearly loved by them. She is survived by her daughters, Roberta Armenti and husband Jim and Michele Hatfield and husband Charles; four grandchildren: Jacy Armenti, Daniel Armenti, Nami Hatfield, and Nicholas Hatfield and wife Jessica; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is very grateful for the dedicated, professional and compassionate care Anna was given by the caregivers at O'Connell Care at Home and the Holyoke VNA Hospice Life Care.

A private burial in Westhampton Cemetary will occur at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anna Merrington's name to the Holyoke VNA Hospice Life Care, The Loomis Employee Appreciation Fund, or the Westhampton Public Library.
