Music by The Piano Brothers

Jonathan “Russ” Nieman passed away in Northampton, Massachusetts on Friday morning, July 13, 2018. He was 47.

Born on Valentine’s Day, 1971 in Woodstock, Illinois, Russ moved to Los Angeles, California and studied music at Northridge State University and California Institute of the Arts. A professional percussionist, he also composed music for Yamaha and Kawai while playing with a myriad of rock bands. Russ met Roxanne while at CalArts then married in 2001. Their pride and joy, Skylar, was born in Los Angeles in 2002. Up for an adventure, the family moved to Massachusetts to enjoy a more rural life, but close to the urban beat of NYC. Russ was a world-class percussionist, Marketing Director, artist, father, friend, and son. His humor pervaded every conversation; his calm in crisis wrested storms.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Roxanne Merryfield Nieman, daughter, Skylar Nieman, mother and father Kathleen and Don Nieman, and two brothers, Don Jr. Nieman and Robert Nieman along with their families and friends.  He is missed by all and taken too early.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2:30 pm at the Unitarian Society at 220 Main Street, Northampton, Massachusetts. All are welcome to help celebrate Russ’ life.
