Marlene M. (Balut) Fondakowski, of Westfield, Massachusetts, born December 27, 1944 in Northampton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in her home on May 2, 2016 after a long illness, with her family by her side. Marlene, the only daughter of Helen (Jurkowski) Balut and Andrew Balut, grew up in Easthampton, and graduated from Sacred Heart School and Easthampton High School. After graduation, she was employed for a number of years at the Northampton State Hospital in the Medical Records room. She left to work for an attorney in Northampton for a short period of time, but soon took a position in the Board of Public Works in Easthampton. She later worked in the Tax Collector’s Office in the Town of Southampton, where she retired. Marlene was very active in the Sacred Heart Parish in Easthampton, and the Sacred Heart School PTA where her children also attended, as well as all Easthampton youth Lassie and Little Leagues, youth basketball, and youth soccer teams. Over the course of her life, she volunteered her time often in the service of others. After moving to Westfield, she became an active member of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield, where she cooked and served meals to the homeless for several years. An avid cook, she became a part-time cook for Father Dan Pacholec, the pastor of Blessed Sacrament, once even cooking a meal for the current Bishop, Mitchell T. Rozanski. She is survived by her husband, Edward, and her four children, Andrew of New Britain, CT, Stephen of Pelham, NH, Leigh of New York City, and Melissa of New York City. She also leaves behind her seven grandchildren Jonathan, Jarrett, Rebecca, Nathanael Stephen, Anna Elizabeth, Samuel Edward, and Josefina.

Calling hours will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home on Sunday, May 8, 2016 from 4pm-6pm. The funeral will take place on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 11am at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 33 Adams St., Easthampton. Burial will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Easthampton.
